This is the third trip in the last four
years that the United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay has sent a
volunteer team to Talanga. The United Methodist Church in Honduras
has a dozen growing congregations around the country, and these
ministries are supported in a large part by volunteer teams from
North America.
The 2011 team install ed
efficient, healthier cooking stoves in people’s homes. Past trips
have focused on building a new parsonage for the local United
Methodist pastor and conducting health and economic surveys to use
as a framework for structuring future trips and support. Also, the
United Methodist Women of UMCWFB donated funds to build a playground
on the grounds of the 10 de Septiembre church.
The stove project :
The common, open-fire cooking method practiced in Honduras and other
Central American countries creates dangerous and unhealthy
conditions and is the number one cause of upper respiratory
illnesses in
children and adults. The stoves we install are more efficient. They
exhaust smoke and fumes outside of the living area, and
they still allow
the user
to cook in the traditional manner.
The cost of each
stove is approximately $150. We
continue to
seek donations to purchase stoves, employ translators and fund per
diem expenses for the team for upcoming trips.
For the 2013 Mission Trip (February 17- 24),
we will be soliciting donations to fund the installation of 20
stoves.
