United Methodist Children’s
Services (UMCS) was established in 1962 as a ministry of the
Wisconsin Conference United Methodist Church. It was a ministry to
serve teen-aged young women who were pregnant or single parents with
transitional housing, parenting classes, and job training to move
them out of poverty and into self-sufficiency. Today, UMCS services
have expanded its ministries to women, children and families.
Through transitional housing, low income housing, a variety of
classes, day care, and food pantry, UMCS served over 53,000 people
in 2010.
The United Methodist Church
of Whitefish Bay has been a vital partner in the mission and
ministries of UMCS. Members of the congregation have and continue
to serve on its Board, volunteer their time during the week with
many projects from apartment refurbishing, caring for children,
bookkeeping, children’s mission projects of birthday parties and toy
collections, Trees of Love gift giving at Christmas, staffing the
food pantry and more. Our financial giving through loose change,
the Advent/Christmas offering, Christmas with a Conscience, United
Methodist Women, Faith Promise, FaithWorks, the Mission budget
within our operating budget and individual gifts have played a
significant role in the on-going work and expansion of ministry at
UMCS.
