United Methodist Children’s Services (UMCS) was established in 1962 as a ministry of the Wisconsin Conference United Methodist Church.  It was a ministry to serve teen-aged young women who were pregnant or single parents with transitional housing, parenting classes, and job training to move them out of poverty and into self-sufficiency.  Today, UMCS services have expanded its ministries to women, children and families. Through transitional housing, low income housing, a variety of classes, day care, and food pantry, UMCS served over 53,000 people in 2010.

The United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay has been a vital partner in the mission and ministries of UMCS.  Members of the congregation have and continue to serve on its Board, volunteer their time during the week with many projects from apartment refurbishing, caring for children, bookkeeping, children’s mission projects of birthday parties and toy collections, Trees of Love gift giving at Christmas, staffing the food pantry and more.  Our financial giving through loose change, the Advent/Christmas offering, Christmas with a Conscience, United Methodist Women, Faith Promise, FaithWorks, the Mission budget within our operating budget and individual gifts have played a significant role in the on-going work and expansion of ministry at UMCS.

For more information about United Methodist Children’s Services, contact Bill Crise, Holly Morse, who is the coordinator for FaithWorks, or Pastor Susan.  Several UMCWFB people serve on the board of UMCS:  Eileen Dean, Dave Fergus, and Rev. Gerry Harrison.  You can also visit the UMCS website for more information.

There are many ways to be a part of this amazing ministry that is making a difference in many lives in Milwaukee and from around the state.  Below are a few:

  FaithWorks

Second Saturday of the month

9am - 12 noon

Join us the second Saturday of the month for FaithWorks as we help UMCS with apartment refurbishing including cleaning, painting, staining, doing small repairs and other miscellaneous tasks.  Come at 8 am for breakfast and leave with a group of others from the church to lend your hand to United Methodist Children’s Services.

  Trees of Love

Collections in December

In December, pick a name of a child living at UMCS from one of our trees in the Jones Narthex.  Shop for them, wrap the gifts and return gifts to church by deadline indicated.

  Food Drive

3rd-4th Sunday of the month

Bring non-perishable food items with you during the designated week.  Fill the boxes in the Jones Narthex.  We have been collecting food on a monthly basis for UMCS for the past four years.  In 2010 we collected the highest amount of food ever. UMCS Food Pantry serves families from every zip code in Milwaukee County except for 53217 and River Hills.

  Advent and Christmas Offerings

Our special offering this season goes to support the ministry of UMCS.  It is used for their operating budget.  Our giving keeps staff employed and serving those in need.
